COACH FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF THE LEARNER'S BRAIN
I am often asked about the methodology I use when designing training sessions for my goalkeepers. My answer is always the same: EMPATHY.
Of course, as a coach, I understand that there are fundamental patterns and basic protocols that must be followed. Professional football knowledge is one of the most important tools to consider, alongside effective team management. But we will address that latter aspect later on.
EXPLOSIVE STRENGTH AND TRANSFER
I have a “master” microcycle, so to speak, available every week. However, there are always variables that shape the dynamics of the sessions day by day and consequently week by week.
If I had to define my approach in one word, it would be INTENSITY. I believe the root of errors lies there. The higher the intensity, the less capacity and time there is for decision-making.
DECISION MAKING
I understand that managing a group of professional goalkeepers is essential to truly comprehend the unique mindset of each player.
Generally, the starting goalkeeper is satisfied because he competes every weekend. Managing and empathising with the backup keeper will be our biggest challenge throughout the season. As for the third-choice goalkeeper, who is often from the youth academy or reserve team, his role is seen as a reward and a continuous learning opportunity.
POSITIONING AND REACTION SPEED
But I found my way to earn their respect and, in doing so, make the specialised sessions more engaging… through HARD WORK.
Avoiding repetition of exercises, keeping them actively involved throughout the session, maintaining an active coaching role, discovering their mistakes together, and encouraging critical thinking. It is within these challenges that the player finds the true value of the session.
